Nirmanika : Reimagined

A signature repertoire of Apsaras Arts Dance Company, Nirmanika : Reimagined is brought to stage at the historic Victoria Theatre, celebrating its 10th year anniversary in 2021.

Originally conceived & conceptualised by Aravinth Kumarasamy in 2011, Nirmanika, means architectonics in Sanskrit. The worship of Shiva in the form of the five elements – fire, water, wind, earth & space, a key concept in Hinduism is explored and embedded in the architecture of temples. This production uses the expressive nature of Bharatanatyam to deconstruct and re-create great and ancient monuments, such as India’s Konark Temple, and Indonesia’s Borobudur.

This production touches on concepts of geometry, space, structure, form, philosophy, history and more in unique and beautifully choreographed dance pieces.  Using the compositions by one of Carnatic Music’s Trinity, Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775-1835), Aravinth Kumarasamy has created a moving and inventive musical score along with the choreography for this production.  Featuring fourteen dancers, this production also features choreography by Anjana Anand and Mohanapriyan Thavarajah.

This production first premiered at Esplanade’s Theatre on the Bay in 2011 and toured widely to several international venues in Asia and Europe bringing critical acclaim and recognition for Apsaras Arts Dance Company.
