Beethoven played the viola. At age 72, Bruch wrote his Op. 83 for his son who was a talented clarinettist. Smetana was completely deaf, near the end of his life, when he wrote his intensely autobiographical string quartet, From My Life. Such are the ways that the composers’ own tales are written into their scores. When you hear their music, you hear their lives.
